Opening Ceremonies

Weren’t they incredible? Zhang Yimou pulled off spectacular concepts in a creative production that could’ve only happened in 2008. It was a great example of the good things we can do with our new technology, but the human contribution was even more impressive! So many people working together to create beauty!

The parade of nations was fun, too – all those wonderfully different people bringing a bit of their corner of the world to that one place in time. I love seeing all the countries, but Croatia, the Netherlands, and the USA top the list. When the Croatians came onto the track, with Ivano Balic carrying the flag (a friend of my friend’s brother – small world), I got all sappy and proud. “Hello, my lovelies! Cestitam! (congratulations)”

The Americans were impressive and overwhelming and beautiful, as usual. They’re always happy to be there, and they deserve it, but there’s something a little disheartening about how they outnumber so many of the countries represented. At some point during the parade of nations the commentators always remark on how this is the main event for so many of the athletes who come to the Olympics from smaller countries. Most of the individuals won’t win any medals, and a whole lot of countries have never won anything at all. It’s pretty noble to push yourself to the limit and make big sacrifices to get to the Olympics when you know that you won’t come home with much more than memories and national pride.

This morning I took another bike ride, this time to the property SLWC bought for the new building. Along the way…

And in the playlist this morning: Appalachian Journey – Hard Times Come Again No More (sung by James Taylor). Great music!

Until next time,
Jen

    Jen,
I loved the uniform for the USA team, very spiffy and cute! I’m always impressed by the USA team parade in olympics ceremony, and this year is one of the best. The ceremony had some very compelling moment, and I’m so happy to know you watched it and liked it.
Tonight’s the women gymnastics team final between the US and China. Can’t wait to watch it, must be a great game.

Catching up with blogs…. good to see the new changes in your life, and the surrender you wrote about.

Dennis and I are enjoying the Olympics as well… it’s unusual for us to sit in front of the TV every night, but since the Olympics, we do the late night watch just about each night.

    To college you go…
